Fountain House uses the term “member” to reflect the voluntary, community-based nature of Fountain House. Using this term makes it clear that members are integral and active participants of the program. Fountain House was created by, for, and because of its members.
The physical clubhouse is often the first place where members are engaged in therapeutic community, and begin the first steps in reclaiming their agency and dignity. The daily work of the Clubhouse is voluntarily carried out by members alongside staff to reinforce belonging and respect, and the responsibility and ownership that members have throughout our programs.
Our employment programs provide members — whatever their previous work experience — with job readiness skills, long-term employment acquisition and enables them to regain the confidence and motivation needed to obtain economic independence. Fountain House creates transitional employment opportunities that engage members in paid work in companies around New York City, and encourages entrepreneurship amongst members in the creation and participation of paid work in social enterprises created by Fountain House.
Fountain House assists members in developing a variety of social relationships and community connections. Through engagement in our community, members form lifelong relationships and friendships, and develop robust social skills that extend outside of the clubhouse setting.
Fountain House operates the nation’s largest Supported Education Program for people living with mental illness. We make it possible for everyone who has the desire to learn to return to or advance their studies, regardless of their previous education, illness, or particular disability.
We know you can’t have a healthy mind without a healthy body. Fountain House addresses and reverses the numerous adverse health trends experienced by members through health and wellness programming at our clubhouse locations, and supports member access to primary and psychiatric care, care management, and home and community based services. Fountain House members experience reduced hospitalizations and a 21% decrease in costs to Medicaid.
Community Oriented Recovery and Empowerment (CORE) Services can provide 1-1 weekly support to assist members with specific goals such as building independent living skills, obtaining peer support, as well as education or employment goals. This service is available to individuals who are enrolled in a Medicaid HARP Plan.
Applying to CORE Services at Fountain House is easy! Contact the CORE Services office at 212-582-3155 or email CORES@fountainhouse.org to get more information about our referral process. An individual, provider or a loved one are all eligible to make a referral.
Fountain House Care Management is a service that allows members to play a central role in the development of their plan of care, making their wants and needs a priority. Together with their care manager, members work to create a personalized plan of care to coordinate medical, behavioral and social needs.
The Sidney R. Baer Jr. Center is the first integrated health home model in the U.S. for people living with mental illness. It is a collaborative partnership with Sun River Health (Formerly Brightpoint/HRH), offering rapid access to therapy, psychiatry, and primary care to members of Fountain House.
Fountain House has created strong partnerships with the Ryan Chelsea-Clinton Center and other high-quality healthcare partners to provide psychiatric and medical care for its members. Ryan Chelsea-Clinton offers members rapid access to high-quality, integrated care including psychiatry, therapy, primary care, dental, women’s health, and multiple other specialty care physicians.
Many of our members have experienced homelessness before finding Fountain House. Of course, having a safe place to live is essential to a person’s recovery process. Our commitment is to support all members in finding and remaining in safe, stable and affordable long-term housing.
Our members have actively participated in horticultural, agricultural, and animal husbandry activities for more than 30 years. From the clubhouse in Manhattan, where we manage the maintenance and beautification of our building and gardens, to the Fountain House Farm in Montague, NJ.
In 2018, we opened the Silver Center to keep our older members supported and connected as they age, and to address the ongoing concerns of isolation, physical illness and decline, inadequate housing, and poverty. In addition to having created a dedicated senior residence within walking distance from our main clubhouse in NYC, members and staff also make outreach visits throughout the boroughs to members who are living in adult homes, nursing homes or independent apartments, to reduce isolation and keep them connected to vital services.
Virtual Programming, first introduced during the Pandemic, continues to empower our members to connect, engage, work, and share with one another and our community anywhere, anytime using digital tools. We are also delivering digital literacy training & tools to enable members to develop skills to stay connected to the community in ways that will help them to meet full economic and civic participation in society.
Fountain House Gallery and Studio provides an environment where artists living with mental illness can express their creative visions and exhibit their work. Founded by Fountain House in 2000, the storefront Gallery in Manhattan sells original artworks and collaborates with a wide network of artists, curators and cultural institutions. The Studio, located in Long Island City, is a collaborative workspace that furthers the professional practice of our artists. Embracing artists who are emerging or established, trained or self-taught, Fountain House Gallery cultivates artistic growth, makes a vital contribution to the New York arts community, and challenges the stigma surrounding mental illness.
YACC supports young adult members of Fountain House (18–30-year-olds) in making connections to communities and resources that are meaningful to them. Through young-adult-focused programming, including social activities, interest groups and workshops, YACC members build and practice skills that support them in school, work and in developing peer relationships.
